It may not be the highly anticipated launch you wanted to read about, but the fact that a name like Borgward is coming back to play ball once again is something we should pay attention to. Backed by Chinese money, the German company is now looking to get back in the spotlight with their BX7 model.
The problem with this car is not inside the cabin but rather on the outside. The Borgward name might be German, but the styling on the outside certainly feels Chinese. We don’t know exactly what kind of discussions took place during board meetings but the guys from Foton, surely seem to have had the last word.
If on the initial press photos we thought we saw some German styling here and there, in person, the whole thing seems closer to BYD than Audi. The headlights are way too big and they protrude brutally into the fascia and the grille, making it look like all of this was just thrown together.
On the sides, the size of the headlamps is also noticeable, and you have to squint really hard not to consider the waistline a bit too tall. Round the back things get back closer to what the Germans might find normal, and the tailgate does have a particular Macan flavor to it.
Inside the cabin, things are much better rounded off. The materials feel pleasant to the touch and the quilted patterns on the seats do bring a certain premium feel to the mix. Some of the plastic could’ve been better but considering that this is a cheap car after all, we can’t really complain.
All the screens inside have high resolutions and they move without noticeable lag. The brown leather was obviously a step above its black counterpart and we can only be glad that was the case, as it did have a really nice feel to it.
As for the power plants under the bonnet, expect 2-liter 4-cylinder petrol and diesel mills as well as a plug-in hybrid. At first, the Borgward BX7 will go on sale in China soon to be followed by the European market. Prices will start €26,000 which is not a bad deal now that we think about it.
