Bocanegra-Based SEAT Ibiza to Debut at Barcelona

The new generation SEAT Ibiza will be showcased for the first time to us as this year's Barcelona Motor Show next month. Details are pretty sketchy at this time but, according to the people over at MotorAuthority.com, the model will be based on the Bocanegra concept and will share some parts with the current Ibiza Cupra.

If the rumors are indeed true, the upcoming Ibiza will be powered by a 1.4-liter TSI engine that generates a maximum power of 180 hp and 250 Nm of torque. Although you might think a 1.4-liter unit is much below what you might expect from such a hot hatch, it is actually capable of pushing the car from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.5 seconds. Moreover, it provides fairly low fuel consumption ratings - around 35 mpg in combined cycle, according to the aforementioned source.

Auto Motor und Sport writes that the new SEAT Ibiza is projected to go on sale in Europe later this year, with the production-ready models to be displayed at the Spanish show.

Just as expected, the car will likely boast a wide array of sporty features, including aerodynamic elements plus exclusive interior parts such as sport suspension, sport seats and many others.

"Customers want attractive, top quality vehicles regardless of whether times are good or bad. That is why we are launching ten new models that suit customers’ tastes this year, thereby positioning ourselves for better times," Seat's president said earlier this month when talking about a potential Ibiza ST expected to arrive later this year.

"The addition of a great-looking, sporty and practical Ibiza ST to our fast-growing range is a very exciting development. It will, I’m sure, find significant appeal across a broad spectrum of UK drivers and I’m very much looking forward to its arrival in 2010," added the head of Seat UK, Peter Wyhinny.
