BMW wanted a car that would make driving a much more environmentally friendly task. In this regard, they created the all-electric i3 but the thing is, they realized that the range their car offers might not be enough. Thinking outside the box, they decided to use alternative means of transportation to get their customers to their destination.
Therefore, the i3’s navigation system can send the destination you chose while driving to your phone along with instructions and directions to use public transportation. That was just the beginning though.

Today, at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, BMW showcased some new technologies that are supposed to take things even further. Hiding beneath the i Connected Mobility name, the built-in SIM card the i3 comes with allows you to connect your on-board computer to various devices such as your smartphone, your PC or even your living-room smart TV.

Using this app on your smart TV, you can access functions that are also available on your phone via the BMW i Remote app such as checking the battery state or the vehicle status. Furthermore, information such as the range of the car on the current charge and notifications can be viewed on the TV screen inside your living room.

To top everything off, you can also access digital appointments inside the car and create inter-modal means to transportation from a meeting to another inside your i3.

BMW i Connected Mobility also monitors for unforeseen events, such as delayed trains or traffic jams. If the traffic situation would prevent the user getting to their next appointment on time, the application prompts them to set off earlier. If the situation is particularly bad, alternative suggested routes for the journey are shown on the smartwatch and can be used directly for navigating.

Smartwatches can be used to lock and unlock the car

So far, keyless entry and keyless go are things that we all are getting used to. Accessing your car without having to press a button on the key fob is brilliant and saves you a lot of headache. However, from now on, cars will be locked and unlocked with smartwatches.

Approaching the car’s handle will unlock it and departing from the vehicle will lock it, just like a conventional keyless fob would do today. However, you’d get rid of an extra item to carry with you all the time. Furthermore, the watch could also be used for more things, like remembering where the car was parked so you can find it easier.
