BMW Shows Us the Story of the First i8 Owner in the World

As part of their #BMWstories endeavor, BMW decided to invite the first ever owner of an i8 in front of a camera to tell us how he made the decision of buying one of these in the first place. The tricky part is that this man decided to order one before anyone knew it would go into production.

It was 31.10.2010 when Dirk Schulz drove down to his local BMW dealer and asked to speak to someone about configuring an i8. Back then the car was in the concept guise and nobody actually knew if it would eventually be put into production.

It really didn’t seem to matter for Mr. Schulz, however, as he was determined to get one way or another. He made a downpayment right then and there and decided to start waiting for his dream car.

But wasn’t he worried about how the car would turn out? It’s a logical question but the thing is, our man here was already a fan of the brand, doing basically the same stunt a while ago, when he also purchased one of the first Z1 models ever made, another controversial car from Munich.

Furthermore, according to his own words: ‘the build quality of BMW has always been top notch’ so he wasn’t worried. One thing wasn’t up to his expectations though: the engine choice.

Since the car wasn’t finished at the time he ordered it, nobody knew what engine would be powering it. Back then, the S85 plant was the most powerful one and the E60 M5 that used it was a rocket with four doors. Therefore, Mr. Schulz thought that the i8 would be build using that plant but the end result was different, a lot different.

The i8 is using a ‘measly’ 3-cylinder 1.5-liter turbocharged plant along with an electric motor for a combined output of 362 HP and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque. The way they work together though is worth every penny according to the proud owner. Check out what he had to say about his experience in the video below.
