Another international motor show, another Vision concept from BMW. But this time around, the German automaker is serious about producing the one-off at its Dingolfing plant. The first models will roll off the assembly line in 2021, complete with D+ACES.
“With what?” D stands for design according to BMW while ACES is an acronym for Autonomous driving, Connectivity, Electrification, and Services. Expected to slot somewhere between the X5 and X7 in the lineup, the iNEXT incorporates all of the automakers “strategic innovation fields.”

From the standpoint of design, the concept features the classical four-eyed headlight setup. Two cameras replace the exterior mirrors, and the windscreen merges with the panoramic roof. We’re not too sure about the motorsport-inspired aerodynamic diffuser at the rear end of the vehicle, more so when there’s no exhaust tailpipe in sight.

Finished in Liquid Greyrose Copper that changes in shade to dark rose, the iNEXT appears to combine the profile of the i3 with that of a multi-purpose vehicle and an SUV. The cabin is on a different level altogether from the exterior, sporting more things in common with a lounge rather than the cockpit of an automobile.

The reason BMW designed the interior “as a mobile space that offers real quality of life and addresses the need for a new favorite space in which we can be ourselves and relax” is the autonomous driving technology, which would take over the duties of the driver in most driving scenarios. The cloth-and-wood combination is interesting for BMW, more so when you remember that leather is considered the go-to luxury in this segment.

Even though the powertrain is all-electric, BMW has the audacity to describe the Enlighted Cloudburst cloth upholstery as “petrol-colored.” Sarcasm or not, the color of the seats works together with the wood like a hand in glove.

Earlier this year, BMW took the veil off the fifth-generation electric powertrain that will be used by the iNEXT (also called i4). Starting with Li-Ion prismatic battery cells, the powertrain also includes an electric drive unit codenamed “Heat” which can be taken up to 250 kW (340 PS or 335 horsepower). In regard to range, the iNEXT is capable of approximately 370 miles (595 kilometers) according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure.
