BMW M4 GT4 Does Awesome Hockenheim Lap Time, Matches Porsche 918 Spyder

The GT4 incarnation of the BMW M4 is reserved for the track, but, being based on the street car, its performance will always fascinate us. And this is why Sport Auto recently threw an M4 GT4 at the Hockenheim.

The Bimmer delivered uber-solid performance on the short layout of the German circuit, with a lap time of 1:06.7. And since we dropped an apple-to-orange comparo in the title, we'll mention the 918 Spyder needed 1:6.3 in an earlier test conducted by the German magazine.

As for how the M4 GT4 stacks up against the meanest road-legal version of the Bavarian Coupe, namely the M4 GTS, you should know it took Sport Auto 1:9.6 to complete the course in the latter.

The GT4 racecar might be based on the road-going M4 Competition, but the track-only treatment is easily visible. Note that we're talking about the kind of car that usually takes part in racing series where most drivers put their own money on the table.

The axles as motorsport-grade, with the rear one featuring a Drexler limited-slip differential.

As for the suspension, this is far from what the street car offers. To be more precise, you get spherical bearings and adjustable arms, while the front can now accommodate 305-section rubber. Three-way adjustable Ohlins coilovers handle the damping. Oh, and let's not forget the racing slicks.

On the firepower front, the twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six delivers anywhere between 430 and 500 horsepower, depending on the chosen setup.

You also get carbon-ceramic brakes to fight the fading that might occur during on-track use, with the brake bias being adjustable from the inside the vehicle.

Thanks to a carbon fiber diet, the weight sits at a decent 3,100 lbs (1,400 kg), while major benefits come in terms of aerodynamics. As for how all these upgrades work in real life, you can find it all out in the video below.
