BMW’s 8 Series might finally get a successor, as a report shows that the German company has applied for several trademarks for model names related to the 8 Series, including M8.
BMW’s luxury GT of the 1990s could come back to the market and fight Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class Coupe in a few years from now. According to a report, the German company has undertaken one of the first steps in preparing to launch an all-new model, trademarking its name.
While BMW might not make a new 8 Series very soon, the company still has to keep its rights on the patent should it decide to launch a modern version of the luxurious coupe it had in the ‘90s.
According to the report, BMW trademarked the 825, 830, 835, 845, 860, M8, and M850 model names this March.
You do not have to be a BMW specialist to understand that the names mentioned above refer to the 8 Series from the same manufacturer.
Quoting an unnamed BMW insider, the Brits at Auto Express say that the move is more than just keeping tabs on badges for future use, so fans of the famous E31 8 Series can dream freely of a modern successor.
While the first 8 Series was the right car at the wrong time, as it proved to be expensive when customers were not in the mood of purchasing luxury coupes, the successor of the model might come at the right time for the automotive industry.
Mercedes-Benz decided to change the name of the CL into the S-Class Coupe with the facelift it applied in its range, and Audi is pondering the launch of an “A9” or similar model which would rival it. Meanwhile, BMW fans kept wondering if the company would ever return to the 8 Series, and this report seems to show that Munich’s finest is working on something new.
Most likely, the all-new 8 Series would be built on a modified platform from the current 7 Series, but with a GT orientation. The shift in BMW’s range would allow the German company turn the next 6 Series into a future rival of the Mercedes-AMG GT and the Porsche 911, the same report explains. On this point, we give them credit, as the successor of the current 6 Series would require a different placement in the range to make room for the potential 8 Series.
