The topic of a BMW M5 having an xDrive box for you to tick is about as insulting to some fans as the idea of a V6 M3...Jokes aside, the last time we heard about this, M Division’s head of R&D, Alvert Biermann, said he believed this would help the car sell in the snow belt, where AWD Audis and Mercs are doing well. However, this was soon defused.
Now, Australian magazine Brisbane Times quotes BMW M5 Project Leader Max Ahme as saying that they are “ thinking about it”. According to him, there is real need here, as the constant horsepower battle means that the M5 might need more traction soon.
However, he stops short of saying the M5 xDrive is on the way, as the added weight would take away from the essence of the car.
“It’s a good idea but it would add 120kg to the car and it’s over the front axle,” he added.
