BMW’s Driving Experience is part of the company’s efforts to make sure that their M cars are not a threat to their customer’s lives and that they know how get the most out of them in every situation.
As you probably already know, an M5 or an M3 could easily get you in trouble, even on dry asphalt, so it might be a good idea to know what to do in case the back end starts sliding out to the sides, panicking not being one of them.
In this regard, the BMW school went to Arjeplog, Sweden, just 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of the arctic circle, to show their students exactly what to do but not on asphalt but rather straight up on ice.
Rally champion Walter Röhrl explains: “The fastest option on asphalt is to make a clean streak, while drifting is the answer on slippery surfaces. The front of the car points towards the inside of the bend, so that the propulsive power of the centrifugal force counteracts this a little and actually permits a faster speed than stable driving.”
To perfectly emphasize exactly how a normal car would act in normal winter conditions, the M3s were fitted with spiked tires for better traction, in the given condition. Then, the instructors got behind the wheel and started showing the students what to do, as you can see in the video. For more info, check out the M Power website where you can find various testimonies from people that already graduated the course.
