As the release of the i8 is getting closer by the minute, everybody is starting to wonder about how the new B38 engine will behave and if it will rise to the high expectations everyone has.
Up until now, there have been a lot of speculations surrounding this new 1.5-liter unit and its possible speculations. One of our sources at BMW claims that the new 3-cylinder engine was built to become the new entry-level unit for the BMW and MINI line-up.

The whole idea behind the new engine was to be more economical and part of the EfficientDynamics family. Therefore, depending on the application, the new unit can consume 5-15% less fuel than its predecessors (the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder unit).

"The new 3-cylinder engine's main objective is to become the entry level engine for future BMW and MINI models. It is still too early to announce any specific application scenarios," said our source.

There you have it folks. The rumors that the 1.6-liter unit from the MINI line-up will be retired and replaced by the B38 family, seem to be true and we'll see them show up starting with the Mk3 generation.
