BMW Registers X2 Sport Moniker

It seems like BMW’s upcoming/rumored X2 model is finally coming and it’s not coming alone. The Munich-based company filed a trademark claim for the ‘X2 Sport’ name on September 24. After over a month, the German authority that handles such issues, the DPMA Register, approved their demand and the moniker was introduced into their pages.
According to their website, BMW is allowed to use that name until September 30, 2024, probably around the time the first generation of X2 models will be nearing the end of production. However, the name doesn’t really make all that sense.

Up until now, most cars made by the blue and white roundel badged company were split between M Sport, Luxury and Modern lines. In recent years, those names changed for some of the models but their names were not trademarked. This move seems to be doing the opposite.

It’s either that or BMW is definitely planning on releasing two different models under the X2 name. That would probably hint at a variant with three doors and one with five, the former being the ‘Sport’ model. Highly unlikely.

The one scenario that makes most sense to us, is the one implying that the name of the new SAC will be X2 Sport altogether, somewhat in a similar fashion to the 2 Series Active Tourer moniker. If this is the case, we’re in for a couple more suprises.

Nobody knows anything at the moment

For now, though, nobody either knows anything about the name or nobody wants to share that information. What we do know is that the X2 (or whatever its name will be) will be using the same UKL platform and will be front-wheel drive, sitting at roughly the same size as the F48 X1.

It will be available with xDrive as well but it will have a different body style compared to its more ‘utilitarian’ brother. Last, but not least, it will also be sharing its engines, part of the B-family. That means we’ll get to see new 2-liter plants under its bonnet but 1.5-liter 3-cylinder mills are possible. Expect all of it to come in a dealership near you in 2017.
