BMW fans, get ready for another Sport Activity Coupe model as a close insider confirmed yesterday that the Bavarians gave the rumored X2 the green light to be released somewhere in 2017.
At the moment, the only available information states that the new car will be xDrive only, similar to the X4 and X6 models that share the overall design. Honestly, that’s a relief.

We’re saying that because the X2 will be based on the second generation X1 that will be the brand’s second front-wheel-drive model, using the UKL platform.

As for the engines, expect the X2 to also share the units with his crossover brother, starting with 1.5-liter 3-cylinder transverse units and going up to 3-liter inline 6-cylinder architectures, longitudinally fitted.

The same source claims that there will be two versions available, a 3-door and a 5-door, even though that doesn’t seem to make too much sense, considering the niche-invading scheme BMW is currently applying.

The upcoming Countryman and Paceman will share this platform too and quite a lot of parts with the new X2, if it comes out as both a 3-door and a 5-door. Apparently the 5-door Countryman will be more like the Dakar-winning model and feature some more aggressive and bigger design.

The 3-door Paceman will be more sporty and city-orientated, destined to be used inside megacities and so on. Therefore, if we’re to believe Scott26, the Paceman will live on.
