The North American division of German manufacturer BMW announced last night that its vice president of Marketing Jack Pitney died while on vacation at his farm because of a so called “accident,” without providing any additional details about what had happened.
Although information is scarce at this point, it appears Pitney was working on his tractor when the accident occurred. At least this is the story according to an internal BMW source.
"He was working on his tractor on his farm in Dutchess County (N.Y.)," the executive was quoted as saying by nj.com. More details about the tragic incident will be made available shortly.
Before joining BMW, the 47-year old executive worked for Ruder Finn Public Relations in New York, Hill Holliday Connors Cosmopulos Advertising, and Bauer & Rosner Marketing Communications, after having started his career in the advertising department of Brooklyn newspaper. The executive held a bachelor's degree in political science from Occidental College.
Pitney had been with BMW since 1995, when he came aboard to run the corporate communications department. Being one of the most fervent supporters of bringing the MINI brand into the US, he was appointed the general manager for MINI, a position he held in between 2001 and 2005.
On September 1, Pitney was scheduled to become the head of the German manufacturer's Eastern Region, to take charge of the operations regarding the brand in the New York region. His role would have meant he will have to work primarily with the BMW dealers, one of the biggest challenges for the company's executives.
