At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show we caught wind of what BMW has been hard at work on in terms of lighting. A collection of all their findings was the M4 Concept Iconic Lights that took the center stage of the company’s stand in Las Vegas. Now, the Bavarians are telling us all about it with a brand new video.
What we have below is actually the presentation that took place at CES, recorded properly. As you can see, the M4 was positioned on a rotating disc and was shown in various situations using three huge canvases on the sides on which images were being projected.

The big deal here is that this particular M4 is fitted with both laser lights and Organic LEDs for the taillights, becoming the most advanced car in this regard that BMW ever put together.

While we have seen laser headlights before, on the i8 for example, this time we’re also introduced to OLEDs, all in the same package. What’s more, the lasers are now available with self-adjusting beams or Adaptive Lights in BMW lingo.

What that means is that they will basically avoid blinding traffic participants, both right in front of you but also from the oncoming lane, similar to the way LEDs work today. However, they’ll do that at up to 650 yards.

Lasers will also be used to tell you if you can fit through a narrow gap and they will use GPS data to basically look around the corner, as you can see in the video.

On the OLED side of things, we’re just entering new grounds. Thanks to this technology, tail lamps can change appearance on the go. They will probably also change in size down the road, a future we can envision closer than you think.

That’s because according to a little fine print in the video’s description on Youtube, we now know that BMW plans to launch a production model using OLEDs in the near future. Could it be the G11 7 Series or could we expect a surprise even sooner, say at the Geneva Motor Show?
