BMW’s OLED and Laser Light Show at the 2015 CES Is Incredibly Good

Earlier this week we told you all about the new technologies brought forward by BMW at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show that is currently underway. The engineers put a lot of thought into what they were going to show us and we have to admit we’re impressed.
The self-parking i3, the over-the-air map updates and even the i8 key fob with an integrated 2.2-inch display all look great but they pale in comparison to the main attraction of the entire stand: the BMW M4 Iconic Lights.

The concept car introduced us to BMW’s first laser lights that can also adapt to the road. The principle is basically the same as on the LED lamps: a camera scans the road ahead and then projects the light in such a manner that it doesn’t affect other road goers.

However, since laser technology illuminates twice as far compared to anything else on the road, the camera had to be upgraded too. Therefore, instead of a usual lens device, BMW used another laser to track down cars in front. This laser, however, is invisible.

That’s not all that the new high-power diodes installed in the headlights can do, though. Working together with what they call Dynamic Spotlight Detection, they will send a beam of light on any animal or human near the road, to warn you of their presence. The system works very well already, on cars fitted with LED beams at the moment but the upgrade laser light brings refers to the distance at which is increased at 100 meters now.

OLED taillights are spectacular

Now, all that laser talk is all very interesting. The tech will also even project information on the road later on and tell you if you have room to get in those nasty tight spots around town but OLEDs seem to be even more impressive.

Developed as an alternative to LEDs, the organic light they emit is a lot warmer and seems to be going in all directions, unlike diodes we have today. Furthermore, they can be embedded to give off a 3D look. Don’t believe us? Just check out how they work at BMW’s stand in Las Vegas... It simply blew our mind!
