It’s a known fact that most premium manufacturers are selling cars in China at bigger prices than usual. Sure, most markets have their own fluctuations between them but when it comes to the Asian country things get a bit ridiculous.
BMW, for example, is selling cars by the thousand in the communist country and yet their prices are sometimes two or even three times bigger than on similar cars sold in the US. That prompted some customers to reach out to the black market and import cars from the US at a lower price. Of course, such a practice was illegal and things were shut down pretty quickly but it goes to show just how big of a difference exists between the two top markets for BMW.
Now, the i8 is bound to go on sale in in China and things aren’t looking good in case you’re thinking about getting one. According to various news outlets in China, the plug-in hybrid sports car will have a price tag between CNY 1.98 million and CNY 2.18 million which, at today’s exchange rates would make it $321,000 to $354,000. Considering the same car starts at $135,700 in the US, it’s not a fair contest.
However, the demand for the i8 will probably exceed the production and the allocated stock for China by quite a lot. The i8 is already sold out in the UK and other markets and BMW claims that all cars scheduled for production this year are already accounted for. Furthermore, if you were to place an order today, you might get one in around 10 months. That’s how long the waiting list is.
