When BMW launched its one and only supercar, the M1 in the 70s, it also introduced one of the most legendary engines ever, a powerful 3.5-liter DOHC straight-six mounted in the middle of the car. But three decades have passed, and their next mid-engined car will have half as many cylinders and a lot of little electric motors.
The i8 hybrid coupe will launch in a little over a year from now, powered by a 1.5-liter turbo engine producing 220 hp and aided by the power of electricity.
This prototype of the i8 has transformed and evolved into one that's a little closer to production, the main changes over previous versions being that real production headlights have been added to the car. They appear to be all-LED, as are the thin strips of LEDs that make up the taillights. Everything looks so fancy we might just agree people should pay over €100,000 for what is essentially a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engined car.
