Yesterday was a big day for BMW's first ever full electric vehicle, the i3. The car that was designed from the ground up to be used as an EV was charged for the first time at a public charging station with combo-charging DC Fast charging system.
What does that mumbo-jumbo mean? First of all, the car was fully charged in under 30 minutes at the station located at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego, California. The system allows the user to use both 110V outlets and 220V ones, whilst a DC Fast Charging outlet is also available.

"The start of the public DC Combo Fast Charging Infrastructure installations in the US is a great base for the US launch of the new BMW i3, because it will offer our customers the ability to recharge their EV in less than 30 minutes instead of the three hours needed with conventional 220 volt public charging stations” said Cliff Fietzek, Manager Connected eMobility at BMW of North America.

This system was developed with the help of most OEMs and the EV industry. The first ones to test the new stations were BMW and General Motors, the tests being done in two locations, Munich, Germany and Warren, Michigan.
