Ever since the A45 came out we saw a lot of comparison tests. That is only understandable as the hot hatch segment is one of the most interesting and popular ones out there. However, up until recent years, when BMW decided to enter this segment, the GTI was the unchallenged king of this segment.
Don’t get us wrong, we respect the GTI’s legacy and we fully understand that hot hatches wouldn’t be what they are today without the Golf, but all of that car’s evolution helped other manufacturers bring even better choices to the market, and that’s good for all of us.
The M135i and the A45 AMG are probably the top dogs in this segment already, even though they are relatively new to it, compared to the Golf. The guys from Which? Magazine took them all out to see which is best.
While the Golf is not actually in the luxury segment like the other two contestants, it’s still offering a lot for its money and it is the cheapest one of the 3. It also has the least powerful engine and FWD.
The Mercedes is an incredible machine. AWD, 360 HP and 450 Nm of torque and a double-clutch gearbox make this car sound like a supercar (one sold a couple of years ago). However, for the hatchback segment it’s a little too hardcore, too tough and rough for daily use.
Here’s where the BMW steps in. It is the perfect bipolar car. With the switch of some buttons you can turn this car into either a fun hot hatch that gobbles up miles in seconds or you can use it with your family, carry groceries and not spill your coffee because of the suspension.
That’s what we think a hot hatch should be all about and 2 of the cars listed above do so. The other one is simply too expensive and too hardcore to be properly enjoyed on a daily basis (take it to the track and it’s a completely different story, but how often do you go to the track?).
