When Mercedes-Benz released the A45 AMG in the same segment as the BMW 1 Series, everyone went mad, immediately proclaiming the Merc as the better car. We think otherwise though.
As proof, one of Bimmerpost's old members went out to a dealership to have a run at Merc's new car, to see how it stacks up to his own BMW M135i. Needless to say that things didn't work out exactly as the journalists say.
Sure, the AMG is quite agile and hard, especially on a track, but how about in a daily routine? The M135i is definitely more comfortable to live with and more spacious than the Mercedes, this being one first plus for the Bimmer.
The engines. The 2-liter under the bonnet of the A45 AMG is, without doubt, impressive. It offers a lot of bang for its size and the car is fast but it's definitely not as smooth as the N55 unit in the BMW.
The 2 extra cylinders and the torque that goes up from nearly idle is something that can easily get you addicted on the M135i. And then there's the sound, probably the weakest link on the Mercedes.
Sure, the A45 might win on some categories like exterior looks and track handling, but as a daily commute car, the BMW is better. After all, most of the time you're inside the cabin and the interior of the F20 is driver oriented, compared to the Merc. Furthermore, the engine and 8-speed gearbox make this car a lot more comfortable.
