Back before Mercedes-Benz had the chance to facelift the current E-Class Estate the same comparison was made between Germany's titans. Today, Auto Motor und Sport took them for another run, just to see if Mercedes learned anything from the embarrassing loss it suffered a couple of years ago.
The new E-Class Estate feels better from the first moment you look at it. Visually it's a whole new spectacle. It has everything you want and looks good. Furthermore, the engine has been updated and now feels smoother and better. It seems like Mercedes just took its time until now to mature this model and create the best possible version.

Looking at the facts, the E200 T has a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine with 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque. The car the guys had for this test was fitted with a 7-speed automatic gearbox.

Going over the Bavarian side, the engine is almost identical. The same 184 HP and 270 Nm (200 lb-ft) of torque but, this time, 8-speed automatic gearbox. Even the starting prices are extremely close.

The E-Class is a bit bigger. It's boot can take up to 1,950 liters, which is almost 300 more than the Bimmers. Furthermore, the interior feels better and is definitely tech-savvy oriented (you get internet and a couple of new features for the facelift version).

The BMW catches up with its more comfortable back seats and the excellent adaptive dampers which totally transform the car. However, Mercedes's air suspension wins this test.

Overall, the Mercedes wins but just because of its more comfortable ride. Out of every test, the cars were extremely close in every comparison. The air suspension, however, tipped the scale slightly in favor of the E-Class.

That's good news for BMW because now, they now what they have to improve for the much-expected LCI version and can get to work, in order to take the new E-Class down and reclaim their supremacy.
