BMW F30 328d Review by LeftLaneNews

The New York International Auto Show brought the US Market a new BMW model, one that will be taking the 335d's place as BMW's only 3 Series diesel car: the 328d. Even though European customers know it already as the 320d, the American diesel enthusiasts are still reluctant to see what it's capable of.

The new 328d has a 2-liter turbocharged diesel engine with 180 HP and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque and will only be available in the US with the ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. It has 85 HP and 145 lb-ft (196 Nm) of torque less than the previous diesel 3er, the 335d.

That's the most important aspect Americans are worried about. Is it enough? Well, it is. The 328d was not conceived to be a track champion but it is sporty nonetheless. It will do everything you need without a problem and it will save you money at the same time.

With a fuel consumption that can reach up to 45 mpg (5.2 l/100 km, according to some officials) the 16 gallon tank (60 liters) should give you at least 640 miles (around 1000 km) of range. That is impressive for the US Market.

The 8-speed gearbox feels smooth and performant, having no problem whatsoever picking the best gear. The diesel sound is really well covered but you will sense it a bit at idle. Overtakes are easily done with, mostly due to the impressive amount of torque but also thanks to the impeccable gearbox behavior.

Overall, the 328d seems like the perfect car for anyone, no matter of the continent. However, we'll have to wait and see how the American public will take to it as they have the final saying.
