We've been seeing a lot of 3 Series Touring reviews lately and Top Gear decided to join the bunch. However, they tested a petrol, all-wheel-drive model, a rather rare appearance amongst Touring 3ers.
When you're looking to buy a xDrive Touring you're more likely to go for a diesel than a petrol, even if it is a 320i. The reason is obvious: diesel engines have more torque and will come in handy during snowy winters, when the all-wheel-drive transmission really pays off.

So, the only advantage you'll get for some €2,000 ($2,600) is a couple of stress-free days during winter and some 5 mpg less in fuel efficiency. Is it worth it?

According to Top Gear, yes. The BMW xDrive system is not only extremely efficient but you also hardly know it's there. Its ability to send up to 100% of the 184 HP and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque to one axle is rather impressive and will allow you to enjoy the roads ahead, no matter the season.

In tight corners you might feel some of the power transfer but that will only bring more sheer driving pleasure to the tips of your toes. In this configurartion the front end will pull you forward while the back will be following smoothly (it feels even better than it sounds actually).

This car is, most of all, a "benign confidence-inducer" that will get you through any kind of weather. Get it with a diesel engine and you will have the best family car you can wish for.
