BMW has just announced that it will begin a very extensive user study for long-distance commuting in all-electric cars. The testing will be done in the German city of Leipzig.
The German automaker will give 15 of their 1-Series coupe-based ActiveE models, which will carry out the required tests. Funding for the project comes from the federal government's 'Electromobility Connects' Bavaria-Saxony.
The 15 EVs will be run in separate testing sessions, or phases, of which they will have five, each lasting a total of twelve weeks. They will record data from users which have a daily commute route of between 40 km to 100 km (25 - 62 miles).
Each person who will be given an ActiveE is required to install a charging station, either at home, or at work.
The research will be carried out by BMW themselves, with aid from TU Chemnitz (Technology University) and the local municipality.
BMW has acquired a lot of information through their extensive teasing of both their MINI E and the ActiveE, which have racked up an impressive 16 million km and 5 million km respectively. It is also an important year for BMW's green aspirations, as they are expected to launch the electric i3 by the end of the year.
