The 12-Hour Bathurst is an annual international race held in Australia that gets together plenty of motorsport amateurs from around the world. As you probably guessed, it’s an endurance event which means that it’s not all that easy to even finish, let alone win it.
This year’s edition took place on the weekend that just ended and had a Nissan GT-R NISMO GT car on the first place followed by an Audi R8-LMS Ultra 20 and an Aston Martin Vantage. For one BMW M3 GTR, this year wasn’t all that good though.
As you can see in the video below, as the dawn was breaking the M3 driven by Anthony Gilbertson for team Hallmark Homes (and the only M3 in the race by the way) hit a kangaroo that somehow managed to slip the security and onto the track.
Since this is a race and usually the cars have extremely high velocities, the outcome wasn’t all that pleasant. As you can imagine, hitting basically anything at 220 km/h (140 mph) translates into irreparable damage, especially if it’s a living creature.
Yes, the kangaroo probably died instantly but what’s even worse is that the driver could’ve lost his life as well. Fortunately, he managed to keep control of the car until it came to a complete stop but things could’ve gone a lot worse in a millisecond.
Of course, the car was also damaged (as you can see in the photo posted below) and the team had to forfeit. Gilbertson also had to spend several hours in the hospital for check-ups before the doctors gave their approval for his release, after making sure that everything was ok and he was out of harms way.
