For the 2020 model year, the BMW lineup will lose no fewer than three nameplates in the United States. These are the 3 Series GT, slightly larger 6 Series GT, and the 6 Series Gran Coupe.
First things first, the 3 Series GT is based on the previous generation of the compact executive sedan. Sales weren’t all that hot either, and given the price point, we’re not surprised that BMW pulled the plug. Part of the reason the more practical model was so expensive is the standard xDrive all-wheel drive and the 330i specification for the inline-4 engine.

Previously known as the 5 Series GT, the 6 Series GT continues to be based on the 5 Series but costs a few dollars more in the U.S. of A. The 640i xDrive is the starting point in the range, translating to 335 horsepower, 5.1 seconds to 60 miles per hour, and $70,300.

Expensive as it is, who could say no to seating for five, tons of room for the rear passengers, and 65 cubic feet of maximum storage capacity? On the downside, it’s too much of a niche car.

The 6 Series Gran Coupe is based on the previous generation of the 6 Series, replaced by the 8 Series in three body styles. To this effect, the 8 Series Gran Coupe will enter the lineup for 2020 with lots of standard equipment. Available in 840i, 840i xDrive, and M850i xDrive flavors, pricing for this nameplate ranges from $84,900 to $108,900.

Only the convertible is more expensive than the coupe and gran coupe, topping $121,400 excluding destination charge in the United States for the M850i xDrive. Speaking of soft tops, the Z4 welcomes the sDrive30i variant for the 2020 model year at $49,700 as opposed to $63,700 for the M40i.

Looking at the bigger picture, both the 3 Series GT and 6 Series GT went out without a single bang even though they’re extremely practical passenger cars. Despite their rarity in this part of the world, neither model has the makings of a future collectible, not in the slightest.
