The US market is slowly but steadily starting to receive diesel engine options and the latest carmaker to jump the bandwagon is BMW, which has recently confirmed that it will introduce a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel powerplant in America.
Dave Buchko, BMW Corporate Communications Representative (the man that was previously behind BMW North America’s diesel launch strategy), confirmed the information for Motor Authority, adding that the company has no time schedule of specific models planned at the moment.
We played with the engine, which delivers 184 hp and a peak torque of 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) on the new F30 3-Series, which we think will also be the first US model to receive it, and we found a powerplant that manages to be both muscular and frugal.
In addition to the four-cylinder oil burner, BMW will also offer a new 3.0-liter straight six, twin-turbo diesel in the US, which is expected to deliver at least 255 hp an a peak torque of 413 lb-ft (560 Nm). However, both powerplants have to be tested for the US spec, which means that their final outputs could change.
