BMW’s i8 sporty plug-in hybrid has already raised a few eyebrows this year, and it will continue to do so as it has been officially crowned as the best concept of the year, by a panel of judges at the eleventh North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards.
At this year’s edition of the competition, the more than two dozen jurors made their picks out of a lineup of 34 vehicles, but only those concepts which were introduced during this season of auto shows. It seems that the i8 is set for a very bright future already, despite the fact that it is still a few years away, and the first of BMW’s ‘i’ offerings will be the less-sporty but just-as-interesting city-orriented i3.

The reason for choosing the i8 over any other concept is best explained by Bill Schaffer, who says “With lines that remind me of icy water in a mountain stream, the BMW i8 takes open top driving into a new realm of environmental responsibility, with the mission of the ultimate driving machine firmly embedded,” as well as another juror, Chris Poole, who states that “the i8 concept wraps innovative construction and powertrain technologies in a functional, eye-catching new design language that will be exclusive to the upcoming eco sub-brand it previews. It's an impressive blend of supercar style and speed with future-oriented mpg and emissions performance.
