BMW’s new ‘i’ sub-brand is on its way, and so, the German manufacturer needs to sort out all the logistics of building the two cars which will make up the range, at first.
Of the two cars, the most exciting is without a doubt the i8 sports car, with a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of under 5 seconds and around 3.6 l/100km (78 UK mpg) on the combined cycle, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t looking forward to it.

Being a conventional hybrid, the i8 will get both electric and petrol power, with the latter being a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged unit which is basically half of their 3.0-liter engine, in order for the two to share parts and keep costs down and reliability high - not a bad philosophy.

The 1.5-liter engines will be built by BMW in their engine plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham. The Hams Hall factory has been online for over 11 years, with 3-million engines produced over the years for cars like the X1, 1-Series, 3-Series and MINI cars.
