5 BMW motorcycles and 20 BMW cars were involved in simTD, the Safe and Intelligent Mobility - Test Field Germany, and the results of the project offer a brighter perspective on the safety of transportation in the future.
The total number of vehicles involved in the test was about 120 and they had to deal with real traffic conditions on motorways and major roads, as well as in urban scenarios, using the Car-to-X communication system, based on ah-hoc WLAN interfacing allowing real-time communication.

BMW did extensive testing for their Cross Traffic Assistant, a routine which analyzes a evaluates all the incoming data, such as speed, distance from the intersection, direction of other road users and combines with the info coming from the very vehicle, warning in case other vehicles are in the proximity on a potential collision course.

The Traffic Sign Assistant also triggers an early alert for the driver when traffic signs and other management systems are encountered. Traffic light phasing data, congestions and many more.

For motorcycles, the ConnectedRide system brings even more alerts on vehicle-specific potential hazards, such as fog, rain, slippery roads and more, all interconnected with the rest of the Car-to-X system, sending presence alerts to riders and thus helping reduce the number of accidents, both with and without direct contact.
