Jaguar has been on the rise recently. Their new XF model is very ambitious and aims at taking down the most popular model in its segment, the 5 Series BMW. However, there's still a lot more work to be done, in order to take them and their ambitious goal seriously.
The guys from Auto Motor und Sport took the 520d Touring 5 Series and the Jaguar XF 2.2D Sportbrake models out for a comparison test to see which car is better as a sportive, family car to use on a daily basis, with economy on your mind.

First of all the Jag has the same old 2.2-liter diesel that is not only noisy, but it's also quite thirsty and unreliable. Yes, it has 200 HP, 16 more than its rival in this comparison but it's not a major improvement.

Actually, the power differences are noticed only at speeds over 100 mph (160 km/h). Both cars come with the ZF 8-speed gearboxes but they feel completely different. The BMW is smooth and agile, whilst the Jag just lags behind.

It may be because the XF is also heavier but it's not a big margin, only 16 kg (35 lb). We guess it's all because of the suspension, which is beautifully crafted on the 5er, more comfortable and practical.

The rear passengers also benefit from 3 extra centimeters of head room in the Bimmer, whilst leg room is plenty in both cars. Since we're talking about the interior, we should also mention that, even though the iDrive system is not the best in the world and many complained about using it, the Jaguar is far worse. That says a lot.

Overall, it's not that the Jag is a bad car but when compared with the 5 Series, it's just dull, confused and virtually poses no threat whatsoever.
