Have you ever noticed how BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo owners give each other knowing looks like they'be bought a car that's as spacious as a boat and still rocket-fast? Well, it's time to see if it's as good as a standard go-fast family car, the 3 Series Touring.
BMW went a little crazy with the niches here, developing two cars for basically the same job. This must have cost them a ton in the bodywork department. But which car do you guys think is the looker here? We side with the normal wagon, even though that trunk spoiler on the GT is a pretty rare segment in the segment.

The 3 Series Touring is positively draping in features, like the trunk spoiler, M Performance side skirts and probably a coilover suspension upgrade. However, none of this will make it faster. What will make a difference is the engine, as the wagon is a 335d and the Gran Turismo has the 335i. Normally, i is better than d, but in this case, the diesel has two turbochargers and a ton of torque.

To be more precise, the 335d features 313 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque. It weighs about 1,695kg in Touring format and will get to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Mean, the 335i Gran Turismo should have 306 HP and 400 Nm of torque, being about 20 kg heavier. Even with xDrive, BMW claims it's slower, reaching 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds.

But these are just the official numbers, while a Stage 1 tuning package for the Touring means it probably makes about 380-400 HP, screaming like a modified diesel engine should and polluting its way to a clear victory. And once it's done with its sister car, the 335d takes on a bunch of modified old hatchbacks. But even without the tuning, the Touring will be faster, so wipe that smug look GT owners.
