Ladies and gentlemen this is the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R, the Germans’ latest concept which celebrates their presence on the North American market for 40 years.
It’s basically, as you might’ve guessed by the name, a tip of the carbon-fiber hat to the original 3.0CSL that wrote history for BMW. The car was 200 kilos (440 lbs) lighter than its standard CS brother and did that by using materials that were considered way ahead of their time back then.

Those included aluminum for the bonnet and body panels, wood trims and Plexiglas for the windows as well as a completely stripped down interior.

The Hommage R is all about improving the relationship between the driver and the car. Therefore, its construction was done around the man behind the wheel, creating his suit and helmet first, before moving on to other aspects.

The helmet, for example, uses this new tech to project various info on the visor, improving and eliminating the need for a traditional head-up display. The suit can be connected to the car via its sleeves and you can actually see how data is being uploaded.

Inside, you get carbon fiber seat shells that actually help increase the vehicle’s structural rigidity as well as a roll cage made of the same material. Understandably, much of the bodywork is made of carbon fiber, as you’d expect.

Wood-like trim goes across the dashboard, a throwback to the original 3.0CSL. However, this one actually allows images to be projected through it, stuff like braking points and the layout of the track you’re driving on.

Up front you get the standard BMW kidney grilles in a bigger, elongated shape, flanked by thin headlamps that feature ‘X’s in them, as another throwback to the stickers that used to be applied to headlights back in the day while racing.

Yes, this is a breathtaking creation and the video does cast a bright light on it. Check it out!
