BMW fans have had to accommodate themselves to a lot of things: turbos, all-wheel drive, sports activity coupes or diesels. And soon, they will have to wrap their propeller badges around the idea of a front-wheel drive car.
According to most reports, the 1-Series GT will be in production somewhere in the second half of 2013, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Purists will say it’s a kill-joy, but we say “have you ever tried to drift in a 116i?”
For a number of reasons, the rumored 1-Series sedan will also be front-wheel drive when it arrives on the market in 2016. According to German magazine AutoBild, the 1er four-door will be a notchback with a spacious boot and will be powered by the new three-cylinder 1.5-liter engines. But thanks to all these changes, it will be about €4,000 cheaper than the 3-Series sedan. Mind you, that still sounds quite expensive, but at least it’s on par with the upcoming A3 sedan and Mercedes CLA.
