BMW will introduce its 1-Series range of compact cars to the growing Indian market towards the end of 2013. The cars will face stiff rivalry from the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Calss, but BMW will try to keep costs down by using Completely Knocked Down kits which it will assemble locally.
It’s yet unclear what sort of 1-Series model will be sold in India. The five-door and three-door versions are the most likely candidates, as they best fit the family car genre, but the coupe and convertible can’t be ruled out either.
However, the new 1-Series Gran Turismo that was previewed recently as a concept would be much better. Its range of turbocharged 1.5-liter turbo petrol and diesel engines is perfect for India’s tax brackets, and with its FWD platform, it will be more practical and potentially affordable.
