BMW has finally shown the car that proves they are making a front wheel drive hatchback. It’s called the Active Tourer Concept, and it’s just a skillfully disguised version of the expected 1-Series Gran Turismo, coming some time next year.
They say that change is inevitable and this is certainly true for BMW. The once arch enemy of turbocharging now makes some of the most economical turbo engines out there. But while people won’t mid not spending that much on fuel if the turbo lag is minimal, they will hate the fact that there’s a BMW sold with front-wheel drive.
At least that’s what we’re going to think for now. But BMW has tried to sweep the details under the proverbial rug, by quoting a study that found 80% of 1-Series owners don’t know it’s RWD. That could actually be true, but you can’t help wonder why such a specific study exists.
The Active Tourer Concept is powered by a version of BMW’s eDrive hybrid system that uses a 1.5-liter turbo-three to move the front wheels and an electric motor for the back.
Forgetting about the hybrid part, the BMW 1-Series GT actually will be powered by a family of three-cylinder 1.5-liter engines, both petrol and diesel.
