British automaker Bentley is pondering a Continental GT-based four-door coupe to rival the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.
Speaking to Auto Express, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Schreiber confirmed the company’s plans to look into a four-door coupe that could be sloted below the Mulsanne: “I definitely wouldn't say no to the idea. With the new Flying Spur, we have a model that supports the Mulsanne, and a coupe with four-doors could sit below that.”
However, Schreiber says the new vehicle won’t see the light of day too soon, and our source claims the CLS and 6 Series Gran Coupe contender won’t arrive before 2016. "It's not any time soon, that's for sure, but maybe in the longer term,” he added.
Schreiber also revealed that Bentley aims to push sales from 8,510 units in 2012 to 15,000 per year by 2018, and that the company’s future SUV is expected to play an important role in this strategy. “At the moment our focus is very much on an SUV, because we know the market is there,” he said.
