A black bear managed to enter a 2005 Subaru Outback and destroyed the interior once inside.
The owner of the vehicle notified the sheriff’s office in Golden, Colorado. Two deputies responded to the call, and found the bear in the car with the doors locked. Judging by the moisture on the windows, the animal spent several hours inside, and the owner believes that they secured the bear inside shortly after it entered the vehicle.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office published a video on YouTube showing the animal in the car, as well as his release. Once the hatch was unlocked and opened, the black bear fled through the woods.
Fortunately, no humans were injured while the bear escaped, and the damage was constrained to the vehicle. The local sheriff department is now concerned whether the animal poses a threat to people in the area.
The Subaru Outback’s interior is ruined, 9News notes, as the door cards are ripped out, while the steering wheel is chewed. The upholstery smells awful, and the owner took the time to describe it: “It is like wet dog, but a little worse than wet dog.”
Sorry for the description, but this should be a reminder for you when you park a vehicle near the woods - roll up all the windows, close the sunroof, and lock your doors.
The owner admitted that she did not lock her car the previous evening right after she left it. The bear must have entered the car sometime between the moment the owner left the vehicle to enter the nearby house, and got locked inside once the central locking system was activated.
Once trapped inside, the bear must have panicked, and started to attempt to escape. When the deputies arrived, the animal was seen jumping inside the car, like you would see a dog bouncing on a sofa. Just with more weight and bigger claws, evidently.
