"I wonder if you can handbrake-drift the Scirocco?" says the FWD coupe owner as he does a YouTube search. But to his surprise, there is an actual Volkswagen Scirocco drift car with all-wheel-drive out there.
We don't know how this contraption escaped our attention, but one of the videos showing it in action has nearly 30 million views, making it as popular as Justin Bieber. We think it deserves twice that much, though.
So as the story goes, there's a crazy drifter in Scandinavia by the name of Kenneth Alm. And he liked to show off his mad Audi A4 at an event called Gatebil. But it was broken, and he needed another car that people had never seen go sideways before.
With not much time to spare, Kenneth decided to swap the old AWD drift powertrain into the Scirocco. But this is more of a body transplant than an engine swap. You see, under the hood is a longitudinally mounted 2.5-liter Audi straight-5 diesel block.
It's been modified to run on E85 fuel using a Precision Turbo PT67/68 turbocharger, polished and ported S2 20-valve cylinder head and upgraded everything to produce 800 horsepower. If you think you can't get that much power under the hood of the small VW coupe, check the dyno tune video.
The craziness also includes 1,600cc/min injectors, a rear-mounted radiator with side intakes and the Audi S4 2.7's gearbox, drivetrain, center diff (welded) and drive shafts.
The suspension consists of A4 front and rear subframes transplanted onto the Scirocco and fitted with adjustable Koni coilovers front, KW rears and adjustable Sellholm arms. The brakes are 355mm 2-piece rotors with XYZ calipers at all four corners. Usually, the AWD Scirocco drift car rolls around on 20x10-inch wheels and the cheapest tires it can find because they don't last for very long.
