GM’s decision to close down many of its sub-brands in recent years has saddened us all. However, the news has really struck the brand-loyalists of the discontinued makes, who will eventually need a new car. Where will they go? What will they buy?
An R.L. Polk Associates estimate suggests that there are around 18 million cars from 16 discontinued brands currently on the road and the manufacturers are bending over backwards to get these owners into their showrooms. GM, for instance, is offering Saturn owners $1,000 in cash if they buy a Chevrolet Cruze, Cadillac CTS and a GMC Acadia. Another manufacturer looking to benefit from this situation is Ford. They are offering Mercury lease customers the possibility of getting out of the lease plan with no penalties if they buy any Ford or Lincoln.

In the coming years, the ‘orphaned car owners’ will become a very sought-after category of new car buyer and the manufacturers will definitely be keen to exploit it.
