Australians Fail to Drive on Left Side of the Road, It’s Not What You Think

You could say you know driving on the left side is wrong when not even people in the regions enforcing it fail to do so. One such place is Australia, where forgetting to keep left is an expanding issue. But don’t jump to conclusions too fast.
According to a report, New South Wales Police (NSW Police) fined almost 300 drivers for failing to keep left in a one-day traffic blitz last week, action which was part of Operation Compliance 5, targeting motorists doing so or illegally using the mobile phone, driving with damaged cars and disrespecting school zone regulations.

“Not keeping left on our roads is a community issue that needs to be brought to the attention of all motorists,” NSW Police assistant commissioner John Hartley said. “Driving well below the speed limit in the right lane can cause traffic build-up and result in unsafe and illegal overtaking maneuvers.”

However, before you start making fun of the situation, we’d like to point out the whole thing doesn’t revolve around driving the wrong way, in incoming traffic, but in the right lane of a two or more lanes carriageway.

Could be this caused by a natural tendency to drive on the right side of the road? We don’t really think so. It’s the same thing with us right-hand side drivers using the left lane to escape the first lane slow traffic. Most of the right-side driving countries oblige drivers to keep the lanes close to the middle of the road for overtaking purposes or driving at the speed limit.

Same goes in Australia, but it sounds funny.
