Audi SQ5 TDI Proves Faster than Macan S Diesel in Drag Race

Since the Porsche Macan and Audi Q5 are platform brothers, everybody has been wondering how they stack up against each other in an all-out naval battle of mid-size Autobahn destroyers. Well wonder no more, as today, we're looking at a race between the Macan S Diesel and the Audi SQ5 TDI.

Both SUVs have launch control and all-wheel drive, both have 3-liter V6 engines and both are quite heavy. However, the SQ5's TDI is a biTurbo unit developing 313 PS, which is a shark to Porsche's single-turbo, 258 PS swordfish.

This next drag race was organized by the Australians at CarAdvice on an empty stretch of track. To be honest, the Porsche didn't really have a chance of winning the race, a story that the numbers tell all too well:

  • Audi SQ5: 313 PS, 650 NM of torque, 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h
  • Porsche Macan S Diesel: 258 PS, 580 Nm of torque, 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h

Does this drag race prove anything? No, not really. The Porsche Macan is a much more engaging vehicle to drive, probably the best on the market. It's available with better equipment, gets slightly better fuel economy and is cheaper. That's right, we have a Porsche that's cheaper than its Audi rival… at least in Germany, where the Macan starts at €58,400 and the Audi SQ5 TDI at €60,000.

We've always preferred Porsche's PDK to the 8-speed auto Audi offer. There's nothing wrong with it, but Porsche Doppelkupplung translates into English as "sharper and quicker than anything else".

There's also the looks to consider, as the Porsche is the type of vehicle that demands a second and third look, thanks to its 3D effect taillights, while the SQ5 just looks like an Audi with an S-line body kit.
