Audi's Sales in China Surged in January and February

The major players of the global automotive market are making efforts to expand their businesses in China in order to make the most out the boom registered by the country’s automotive market.

One of Volkswagen Group’s premium brand, Audi, announced that its January and February 2010 combined sales registered an 86 percent increase, as compared to the same period of 2009 - the carmaker managed to sell a total of 31,906 units in the first two months of the current year, as Dow Jones reports.

January sales register a higher growth than the February ones, as the latter were affected by a slowdown during the Lunar New Year Holiday week. According to Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi AG’s Sales Manager, China might surpass Germany as the company’s largest market by the end of the year. The company had previously released sales forecasts showing that this shift will take place in 2012 or even later.

Schwarzenbauer added that Germany and China are expected to repeatedly take the leading market role from each other in the following years, a process influenced by the company’s marketing schemes in the two countries. He stressed that China’s potential will eventually allow it to secure the top position in Audi’s portfolio.

The detailed figures show that Audi’s February sales in China saw a 62 percent increase to 15,108 units, while the company’s global sales registered a 20 percent growth last month. The German market demanded 3.3 percent less Audis in February. In January, Audi’s Chinese sales more than doubled, reaching 16,798 cars, while on the German market, the automaker only sold 1.7 percent more vehicles, totaling 27,304 units.
