Audi Motorsport has revealed the successor to last year’s World Endurance Championship-winning R18 e-tron quattro, ahead of the LMP1 car’s debut at the Sebring track in Florida.
The German company says it has developed “a fundamentally new Le Mans prototype” that’s designed “for maximum efficiency” on the track. The next-generation LMP1 prototype, which is being tested as we speak, aims to win the World Endurance Championship again in 2014.
“We’ve reached a crucial stage in this project,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. “After building the first prototype, testing on various race tracks is now taking center-stage. The tests are mainly focused on achieving high mileage, coordinating the highly complex hybrid drive systems and working out an efficiency optimized total package that has never before been as complex as this one.”
Audi has won the drivers’ and manufacturers’ title against Toyota in the World Endurance Championship this year, but 2014 will see Porsche returning to the LMP1 prototype category. We’re in for a spectacular season.
