Backed by one of the world’s most recognized brands, Virgin Racing will be headed by Alex Tai and, once approved by FIA, it will become the ninth team to join the 2014/2015 Formula E season. The other teams that have signed up for the series are Drayson Racing, e.dams, ABT Sportsline, Andretti Autosport, Dragon Racing, China Racing, Super Aguri and Mahindra.

"The launch of the FIA Formula E Championship is exciting news for racing fans but also for those that believe in developing the great electric cars of the future," said Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson. "The need to create fast, dependable and durable race cars will help to accelerate the sector and showcase electric cars to a large global audience. With races around many famous city centres, I am expecting a lot of spectators, plenty of fun and some sparks flying as the competition hots up."

In case you've missed it, the 2014/2015 Formula E calendar was released yesterday. The season begins in September 2014 in China, and ends in June 2014, in the United Kingdom.
