Audi has announced a new appointment to its board of management, which will have Dr. Ing. Peter Mertens as the Member for Technical Development.
His name might not say much to most of our readers, but we will explain why this hire is notable for the four-ringed brand. As you can imagine, Dr. Mertens is an experienced engineer, but his list of previous employers is impressive. His last job was in Sweden, at Volvo’s headquarters in Gothenburg, where he was the Senior Vice President of Research and Development.
Before working at Volvo, Dr. Peter Mertens was responsible for corporate quality for the entire Tata Motors Group, including Jaguar Land Rover. His job also involved an appointment to the management board of the British division, and he held that position between “late 2010,” and March 2011.
It is interesting to note that Peter Mertens also worked for General Motors Europe, where he was responsible for the compact cars of the corporation in 2004, and for GM on a global scale a year later. His adventure with General Motors started in 2002, when he was hired at Adam Opel AG to be the executive director for medium-sized and large model series.
Previously, Dr. Mertens was the chief executive of a company named “Tegaron Telematics,” which was a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler Services and Deutsche Telecom. He did not get into that position by chance, as he used to work for Mercedes-Benz AG as of 1990, where he held several management positions.
Audi has high expectations of Peter Mertens, who is tasked with making “further progress” with the Technical Development division of the Ingolstadt automaker.
This employment comes almost one year after Audi’s technical boss and Chairman of the Supervisory Board stepped down in the wake of the Dieselgate scandal. It is worth noting that Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg’s position will not be taken by Dr. Mertens, as Dr. Stefan Knirsch already controls it.
