Audi Tradition has probably produced a masterpiece with next year’s photo calendar. Called 'Time warp - the Auto Union silver arrows on the historic race track’, the calendar sees the legendary German racing machines going head to head against each other on the track and on twisty mountain roads.
The idea for the 2011 calendar was born after the 2009 Historic Grand Prix in Bern, where the Grand Prix of Switzerland was held during the silver arrow era.
In order to make this piece of art, the design team used a total of six stunning Auto Union Silver Arrows. The original scenes from the 1930s were recreated on nine tracks, resulting in a set of 13 breathtaking photographs. After careful deliberation, nine tracks were chosen for the calendar: (Germany), Monte Carlo (Monaco), Reims (France), Monza (Italy), Donington Park (England), Bern (Switzerland), Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Zandvoort (Netherlands) and the Klausen Pass in Switzerland.
Though many modifications have been made to these legendary circuits in the last 70 years, the team working on the calendar managed to locate original portions of the track where they could shoot.
The next big hurdle they had to face was to cast the roles of the drivers. Former Formula 1 drivers Jacky Ickx and Hans-Joachim Stuck signed on immediately for the project. "I find it an honor to be here, and to have been there, " said Stuck, whose father Hans Stuck raced for Auto Union and won the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring in 1934.
Stuck even donated his father’s original racing goggles and balaclava for the shoot. Third to sign on was Nick Mason, drummer of Pink Floyd. The Englishman, who originally piloted one of Audi’s Auto Unions at the 2007 Goodwood Festival of Speed, was a must at the wheel for the photo shoot held on his home turf.
