As James May used to say back in his Top Gear days, good news! The Grand Tour will survive beyond the third season. But on the other hand, there’s also some bad news. According to a Facebook post confirming what’s next for the three amigos, “we have a tent to sell.”
The producers are referring to a change of format, with season four seeing the guys “ditch the tent to take on big adventure road trips that we know Prime members love.” Make that Top Gear fans as well, from the days when Jeremy, Richard, and James were presenting the show.
Also of interest, Prime Video “will continue to be the home for Jeremy, Richard, and James for years to come.” It isn't known for the time being for how many seasons or episodes the presenters signed up this time around, but chances are we’re dealing with three and 36 more, respectively.
Tabloid publication The Sun reports Clarkson “has pulled the plug on studio car shows,” claiming that “there are only so many times you can watch a BMW go round the track.” In retrospect, he’s right considering the manufacturers and motoring journalists such as Chris Harris are much obliged to take the latest and the greatest on the Nurburgring.
As for the lack of an audience starting with season four, “I will miss the banter with each other and with the audience” concluded Clarkson. The Doncaster-born British presenter mentioned that Richard and James agreed to this change of format, which is reassuring considering that the chemistry between those three is what makes The Grand Tour so exciting to watch.
You could say that doing road trips is what The Grand Tour should’ve been from the get-go, but let’s not forget that the three presenters and executive producer Andy Wilman have mastered that format over the course of 17 years. A change is always welcome, and based on the hour-long specials we’re accustomed to, we’re looking forward to what’s in the pipeline.

Expect no less than 12 episodes made possible by a budget of £4.5 million on average per episode.
