As the year 2018 draws to a close, it's time to take a look at what the past twelve month had to offer and put together lists and charts of who did what. In the automotive industry, one of the most important such lists is that of the nominees for the Car of the Year award.
This week, the organization which awards the title for the European market announced the seven finalists for the 2019 edition, with the winner to be announced in March next year, at the Geneva Motor Show.
As per of the Year, the final seven that made the cut are Alpine A110, Ford Focus, Kia Ceed, Peugeot 508, Citroen C5 Aircross, Jaguar I-Pace, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
The winner of the competition will be decided by individual vote cast by 60 jurors, most of them journalists. Each juror will have at their disposal 25 points which they will have to divide among at least five nominees, based on individual voting criteria.
The holder of the current title is the Volvo XC40, a car that landed the Swedish manufacturer its first ever such title last March. The car is the first to be based on the carmaker’s new compact modular vehicle architecture (CMA).
The award is a major recognition of Geely’s engineering capabilities and a signal that the Chinese company's decision to enter Europe was a good one, especially since the CMA platform was developed with their expertise.
Volvo had a tremendous year when it comes to its cars getting recognition, as another of its models, the XC60, was voted World Car of the Year on another continent, at the 2018 New York Auto Show.
As for the current list, the surprise entry is the Alpine A110, a much less visible car than some of its more mainstream competitors like the Citroen C5 or the Peugeot 508.
