Alonso: I Have 50 Percent Title Chances

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso reiterated his belief that he can add a 3rd world title to his tally at the end of this season. Having already said that plenty of times throughout the 12 races so far, the Spaniard's last couple of results have brought some realism to those comments, as he is now only 20 points behind leader Mark Webber in the standings.

Asked how he rates his chances of bagging another title after the last race at Abu Dhabi, Alonso said 50 percent. Curiously enough though, he did not mention any of the two Red Bull drivers as his main rivals for the F1 crown, as he believes the experience of having already won one title will count the most in the final few stages of the season.

It only took us two normal races to be fully back in contention for the title. (....) I am convinced that in the final sprint, by which I mean the last two or three races, we will be closer to the top than we are now,” Alonso was quoted as saying, while at Madonna di Campiglio ski resort in Italy, Ferrari's traditional location for relaxation and media events.

The important thing is to remain calm and concentrated and to do our job well. It's hard to say who is my strongest rival: we are all almost equal. Maybe, Hamilton, Button and myself, who have already won a title, will tackle the final rush in a calmer way, having already experienced something similar. Percentage chance? I'd say 50 per cent, which is the normal state of affairs...

The upcoming two events this season – Spa and Monza – are believed to favor the Ferrari F10 because of their high-speed characteristics, which further adds to the Spaniard's chances of entering the final few stages of the season in a good position for the title. He revealed his team will bring some new updates for the Belgian Grand Prix, a common move for all teams after the 4-week traditional summer break.

The car is much improved and so that makes me more optimistic and has seen the whole team grow in confidence. In Spa, we will have a few more things and we hope they help us progress still more: the others will do the same, which means we will have to be better than them and quicker in terms of development work.
